January 17, 2010 on 11:14 am | In B-Sides | No Comments | Written by Nicole Hensley> TUMBÉLÉ! Biguine, afro & latin sounds from the French Caribbean
I stumbled across this fabulous album and even though it only has two songs from Haitian artists, it is a great representation of that region’s scene from 1963-’74. I’m not the only one complimenting the very special compilation. Dusted Magazine says this about the album, “It’s a real treat to hear the sounds on this compilation, which teaches listeners about a particular movement in Francophone Caribbean musical culture. It comes across as a surprise that this music hasn’t received much dedicated attention in the English-speaking world.” The people at Soundway Record Label were nice enough to send me the liner notes for the album and that provided a huge insight to the two songs I played. Check out the playlist to see which ones I played!

> CBS News Helps Red Cross Transport Blood into Haiti
Everybody is helping. Since transporation is so bogged down trying to get into the country, it is being asked that every form of transport unit coming into the country carry needed goods. When the CBS news team flew in, they brough along with them… four cases of blood for the American Red Cross.

January 10, 2010 on 11:16 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments | Written by Nicole Hensley> Bloody tragedies were not Aphra Behn’s specialty but her adaptation of Lust’s Dominion into Abdelazar, the Moor’s Revenge worked out somewhat for her time period, the Restoration period of drama, when it was becoming more frequent for women to grace the stage…. as well as off stage. We heard incidental music by Henry Purcell for that play as it was featured in Pride & Prejudice, the 2005 version during the Netherfield Ball.

> Out of all the music played today, the music of Erich Kunzel meant the most to me. His death was nothing but sadness to me because of his dedication to orchestral music through out the years and the continuation of creativity in the pops form. To me, he was a brilliant producer of entertainment. Exactly as he wanted to me. Here’s Erich Kunzel Remembered on NPR’s Morning Edition. He was after all, the Prince of Pops.
